Welcome! Let's talk about books!
Welcome! This blog is a place created for the discussion of books. We will try to meet once a month, but for when we cannot meet, I wanted a place for us to comment and discuss anyway. There may be some who never are able to make the get togethers, and that's fine, I would still love to hear what everyone is reading and what they think! I am trying out using a blog to see if it will serve us. If it does, great, if not, we will try something else. I plan to make the blog private, but not exclusive. If you know someone who would like to be invited, let me know and we can do that. If you would like to write a post, great, let me know and we can do that too!
Bookish Get Togethers
Our get togethers will alternate between a social get together and a book discussion of a particular book. So we will always have 2 months to read the decided upon book. We will try to meet on the first Thursday of every month. (If you would like to host, let me know, I know I have a couple of volunteers already). I would love to include women and young women in our group. I am out of town the first Thursday in August. Could we meet the second week? August 8th (Wednesday) or August 9th (Thursday)? I'm hoping to discuss "Girls On The Edge" that evening. Have most people gotten a chance to start it, or should we put it off and discuss it in September?
What Do You Want to Read?
What book or books would you be interested in talking about sometime as a group? See my ideas below, also will include other books people in the group have mentioned. We will choose a variety of books, including books for youth. I'm trying to decide: should we choose a more adult book as well as a youth book each time, or would it be better to choose just one book at a time? I'm leaning towards one book at a time... what do you think? Also, how should we choose the books? I think if a person is hosting, they should probably not choose the book as well. This way they don't have to think of too many things. Also, refreshments are great, but I don't want them to stress anyone out. Should we just bring something to share if we want to kind of thing? Let me know in the comments. :)
These are the books I have mentioned before with some additions. Discuss in the comments if there is something you are interested in on the list. Please also add books not listed.
Possible Book Choices
"Echo" by Pam Munoz Ryan - I have been told to listen to this book on audio as opposed to reading it, but you choose. Also recommended to read with youth. :)
"Girls on the Edge" by Leonard Sax
"Okay for Now" (also recommended to read with youth) by Gary D. Schmidt.
"You Learn by Living: Eleven Keys to a More Fulfilling Life" (Recommended to me as a good read aloud with youth, but I have already heard of a couple not interested in this one, so may read on my own).

"Esperanza Rising" by Pam Munoz Ryan (I'm reading this one right now, would be good to read with youth)
"The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place" by Maryrose Wood (I've read this and like it, it's a series. Could read with youth. The library has it, and I have a copy.)
"Teach Ye Diligently" by Boyd K. Packer
"The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell
"Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell
"The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant
The reason you want to listen to Echo is because there is music involved in the story and it plays as you listen to it read.
ReplyDeleteI have not read Girls on the Edge. I am in the process of locating it. If I'm too late, no worries.
I'm happy to meet in August.
I would love to meet in August. Either Wednesday or Thursday will work for me. What time did you say?
ReplyDeleteI have been able to read the first half of girls on the edge and would be happy to discuss it, or wait until September to discuss it.
I would love to add "Bonds that make us free" Terry Warner to our reading possibilities. I am in the middle right now and it is changing my life.
I would love to read Bonds that Make us Free again. I'm not sure I finished it a couple of years ago, but I did love what I read.
ReplyDeleteOriginally I was going to have us meet at 8pm, on a Wednesday. I'm thinking next Wednesday, August 15th at 8pm at my house?
Let's discuss Girls on the Edge in September. If anyone has already read it and wants to start on something else, I think "Boys Adrift" would be a great one. I don't think there will really be any spoilers since it's not a story, so we can kind of discuss both in September for those have read both. Not required to read both.
For any youth joining us, let's read "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Munoz Ryan. So good! We can decide when to discuss that one depending on if youth join us or not.
